DEVELOPMENT IMAGES.

DEVELOPMENT IMAGES.

Some more development images that I have been making. I used a Martin Parr photograph the top 5 images as a background and later cut out the cake and used it on a few other images shown here. I'm really enjoying playing with the view of the images themselves. I quite like cropping in very close so only slight parts of the image can be seen. I also like the idea of using repetitive images. It links in with the idea of stereotypical traits of a women since they can be viewed as a repetitive action, whether its the washing up or cooking. A thought that I had whilst making these images was that although I am focusing on stereotypical traits, I feel that sometimes the line between stereotypes and reality can blur a little. But then again I am focusing on them from a male's perspective thus they do remain a stereotype, if an annoying one at that.

DEVELOPMENT IMAGES.

These are my first PS collages! I really enjoyed making these due to how I could play around with the scale a lot quicker than going backwards and forwards with the photocopier. I really wanted to play around with the composition and PS allowed me to crop my work in whatever way I wanted. I also like how the brown paper background compliments my images well, since I wasn't too sure on how it was all going to look.

RESEARCH - IMAGES.

I've been looking at using different backgrounds to place my images on and using PS it allows me to scan in my own backgrounds or other found imagery. These are just a few that I have found and decided to play around with to help start me off. They are just scanned in notebook pages, brown paper and I even came across some love letters/old recipes to work on top of.

REFLECTION.

I've been really enjoying creating photo montages with various image but I'd like to see what it would be like to create them on the computer. I want to scan some of my sketchbook pages in and see what I can come up with using Photoshop. I think using PS to create collages with will give an interesting feel to my work, with the mix of cut out images against ones found from the internet.

SKETCHBOOK.

These images were a mixture of two ideas. The first two are aimed towards the cooking aspect and view of women. I wanted to keep my images fun and also played with partially hiding the face again. In this case I made little mask that was shaped like a chefs hat. This was to keep the idea of cooking very much in the image. The second two images were related to the idea of beauty. The first out of the two was to highlight a women always being made up, having her full face of make up on. But I also chose to give her oversized lips to also hint at

SKETCHBOOK.

I played around with composition again today and really liked how these came out. I enjoyed placing images onto different backgrounds, like the first picture, and want to apply this to other bits of work to see what the outcome is. These images were all based towards the sexualisation  of a woman but I still tried to keep them light hearted and fun. I also want to play around with adding text to my images since I feel that will help with making my images that bit clearer.

SKETCHBOOK.

These are more scans from my sketchbook that I wanted to show. I've been practicing playing around with scale and composition in my sketchbook. A lot of them came out very surreal and minimal which I quite like since it works well with the negative space but I need to be careful because otherwise it won't portray what I am trying to show. I also wanted to play around with the female face. I know that my project theme is stereotypical traits of women so I don't necessarily have to hide the face, but thought it would be interesting to still mess around with that aspect.

BA6 PROJECT PROPOSAL FINAL.

My final Project Proposal Form.

THURSDAY WORKSHOP.

These are scans of the work I made for the workshop on Thursday 18th. The aim of this workshop was to help us edit and develop our BA6v work so far and generate imagery though selection of particular media and materials that were appropriate to our subject matter. We had to create 4 x A3 double page spreads in a portrait format using text and image that help develop and explore aspects and concepts of our project.

Focus was aimed towards:
  • selection and use of media/materials
  • composition
  • scale
  • viewpoint
  • development of appropriate visual language to communicate your subject matter:
  • drama
  • subtlety
  • crispness
  • blurring
  • mechanical
I found this workshop quite hard to start with since my ideas for my theme were all over the place so I didn't know where to start. The first image I created was created with the idea of being the front cover of a zine. It was also based around my original idea for my project of being an independent woman. I wanted to play with the idea of anonymity and how any female can be an independent woman, which is why I made the hat cover the face of the woman.

I later discussed this image with Fiona and she suggested I took that further and played with cutting out the faces completely and highlighting traits of a women that might make her independent. Such as my second image with the large ears to suggest she is a good listener. Although as I carried on playing with my images I ended up coming to my current idea of stereotypical traits of women. This was after creating the cupcake female to suggest cooking/baking. I preferred this idea to the independent woman theme and chose to carry this on with my work. Even though my images were a little all over the place, I think this workshop helped me to become more loose with my work and placement of imagery. And to not be scared of being extremely minimal or very surreal.

BARBICAN - GEOFFREY FARMER.

Geoffrey Farmer - The Surgeon and The Photographer
26th March 2013 - 28th July 2013

This is a current exhibition that is on at The Barbican Museum in London. The artist is Geoffrey Farmer and over the space of three years he has created hundreds os puppet like figures, all composed from images cut from old books and magazines, then mounted onto fabric forms. This is also combined alongside a new film commission. His work reminds me a lot of Hannah Hoch and it's really interesting to see how he has turned what is essentially a 2D art form into 3D puppets! I love his surrealism of the figures and his pairing of objects, people and animals.

WORK.

These are just a few scans from my sketchbook of what I had started doing. I just decided to play around with my images and type to just get my ideas out onto the page, whether they were bad or good. I find this way of creating images works best for me because then my head isn't getting crammed with crazy ideas and so then I am just channeling them out onto paper and get to see what works best.

LIBRARY WORKSHOP.

Graham Rawle

Clara Mata

Eva Lake

These are some scans I'd done from the library workshop I'd gone to.  I found that they had some really interesting books laid out that linked in with my own project and I ended up taking out the Graham Rawle book so I could have a closer look at it at home. I was really glad they had a lot of collage/photo montage artists out to look at since I feel that it's an area that's not really highlighted much in the library groups. What interested me about these images is the different approaches taken towards collage. Graham Rawle's technique is very much about layering and his work reminds me of Kurt Schwitters, with his use of tearing and using various types of paper. I really liked Clara Mata's work due to its surrealism and mixtures of paper, card, old boxes and drawing too. The last images are by Eva Lake. Her work caught my attention because of her use of nostalgic images of beauty and pop culture.
